*This* Is The Alternative To The Religious Right? No Thanks!
Shorter Olympia Snowe: We need to oppose big government, and agree to disagree on social issues.
Fact About Olympia Snowe: Along with Specter and Collins--and not one other Republican in Congress--she voted for Obama's stimulus.
Message To Olympia Snowe: Follow Specter into the evil party. The stupid party is stupid enough as it is. Think about it, Olympia: By leaving, you'd raise the average IQ of both parties!
The Specter-Snowe wing of the GOP gives the social conservatives evidence for their view that once you reject enthusiastic support for homophobia and misogyny--and their foundation, support for obeying (their interpretation of) God's Law--you turn into a left-winger. With these people gone, I think the me-too option as a response to Obama evaporates. And then there are fundamentally only two broad strategies for opposition:
1.) Take the path of Huckabee-Palin: obey God and trust that everything will work out just fine. 2.) Declare, at long last, that the welfare state's financial bankruptcy is no longer some theoretical consideration but a reality that confronts us right now--and attack the moral basis of "spreading the wealth around." As long as Specter and his ilk are around, they confuse the issue. They lead people to say: why not both? After all, liberals and Specter reject both--so they must be connected!
UPDATE: Clarification on the nature of the "Evil Party" and "Stupid Party" is here.
